Freud  once conceded: “Everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me. Poets are masters of us ordinary men, in knowledge of the mind, because they drink at streams which we have not yet made accessible to science.
even more important in ed ..no?

imagine.. if we stop offering/mandating questions and answers.. that no one is really asking. imagine we trust everyone enough.. to drink at streams.. streams that beg for curiosity.. because they offer the adjacent  possible, the perpetual beta... with no scientific measure as standard/given.
imagine we create time and spaces of permission.. with nothing to prove.. people drive their own dopamine, their own genius.
imagine we redefine public ed ... so that the very essence of that stream.. is what every soul craves.
imagine we offer equity.. because the offering of a public ed has been crafted by the human soul.

it's not that asking the user doesn't help... it's that asking the user within a defined time and space and presumption.. and now.. very toxin filled world/mindsets...
only gets at unhealthy addiction/attachment. which then trumps authenticity..
no?

too simple for science to accept.
but as a lover of mathematical thinking.. which I believe is science's language of simplification...
plenty of warrant to give it a go.

Do online classes suck? bit.ly/VU42qf via@halavais

example of well meaning.. and partially there... as a distraction... and glutten of our resources

Critics of online education could be at least quieted a bit if there were strong structures of course and program assessment. Not just something that gets thrown out there when accreditation comes alone, but something that allowed the ongoing open assessment of what students were learning in each class. This would change the value proposition, and make us rethink a lot of our decisions. It would also provide a much better basis for deciding on teachers’ effectiveness (although the teacher is only one part of what leads to learning in a course) than student evals alone.
This wouldn’t fix everything. It may very well be that people learn better in small, in-person classrooms, but that it costs too much to do that for every student or for every course. The more likely outcome, it seems to me, is that some people learn some things better online than they do offline. If that’s the case, it would take the air out of the idea that large institutions are pursuing online education just because it is better for their bottom line.
In any case, the idea that we are making serious, long-term investments and decisions in the absence of these kinds of data strikes me as careless.

crazy  - we can't get off proving/assessing. even when we say self-reflect - we mean - to self-reflect on what others told me i should do. how does that get at fine tuning your gut?

@monk51295 @ScottElias @TheBIF The National Board process does just that--and is psychometrically valid and reliable.

evaluation has become so meaningless. self-reflect is the key - but only if you are reflecting on you - and not on your assignment. it has to be you and your gut. if we want this to sustain. if we want it to be life-long.. whimsy matters.
