Paul W. Hankins: The control is always based in the proscriptive, but we still need to be able to work out of the descriptive. And for this, I am still hopeful. Description can be inclusive, whereas proscription draws lines/separates.

Name: Jim Burke

Bio: After spending his first three years at Castro Valley High School, Jim Burke began teaching English at Burlingame High School where he has been since 1992.

Prior to becoming an English teacher, Jim taught special education, first in private schools and later in North Africa where he served in the Peace Corps in the mid 1980s. Starting in 1998, he began writing about teaching, focusing on not only English Language Arts but also adolescent literacy in general.

Since 1998 he has published almost twenty books, the most notable of these being The English Teacher's Companion: A Complete Guide to Classroom, Curriculum, and the Profession, published by Heinemann and available in its third edition. In addition, he now serves as a senior consultant to the Holt McDougal Literature program. More recently, he has taken on new responsibilities with the NCTE and College Board. He was elected this year to the NCTE Secondary Section, and has also been appointed to the College Board's Advanced Placement Course and Exam Review Commission for the English Literature and Language courses. When he can, he speaks to and works with teachers around the country, though he doesn't do this much during the school year since he teaches every day. What he really enjoys, though, is just the daily work of teaching and sharing the lessons he has learned along the way from his fellow teachers and his wonderful students.
