ted talk 2009: tribal leadership

At TEDxUSC, David Logan talks about the five kinds of tribes that humans naturally form -- in schools, workplaces, even the driver's license bureau. By understanding our shared tribal tendencies, we can help lead each other to become better individuals.
David Logan is a USC faculty member, best-selling author, and management consultant

great tribal leaders
find someone from
one tribe and
someone from
another tribe and
make introductions

if you can find a way to take the tribes you are in and nudge them forward - 5 stages
stage one: life sucks
gangs & prisons (as members of society we need to deal with stage one - not just write people off) systematically pull themselves away from functional tribes    - as people see the world so  they behave
stage two: my live sucks
(how can people be so dumb and yet live) - the culture makes people dumb - standing in long lines at dmv, what kind of world-changing behavior happens
state three: i'm great
(and you're not) where most of us stay, we find these in places where really smart people show up, the greatest challenge we face in innovation, moving from stage 3 to stage 4
stage four: we're great
zappos values things like fun and creativity,, one of their mantras - be a little bit weird, when people come together for something bigger than themselves
stage five: life is great
people came together only for truth and reconciliation

declaration of independence - most is written in stage 2
martin luther king's greatest line was in stage 3
2% stage 1
25% stage 2
48% stage 3
22% stage 4
2% stage 5 - and those are the ones that change the world

leaders need to talk at all the levels - but need to not leave them there.. tribe members can only hear one level above and one level below

leaders nudge people in their tribes to the next level

moving state 3 to stage 4 is ted - find someone you don't know and someone else you don't know and introduce them. people who build word changing tribes connect like that

stage 4 to stage 5 - gallop polls
were bored so asked - what does the entire world think... how do we survey places where we don't speak other languages... 1st ever world poll

we all form tribes
what kind of an impact are the tribes that you are in making?
listen for how people actually communicate in the tribes you are in ...
will your tribes change the world.
