more insight on flipped..
our first thinking on it came 4 years ago in researching Michael Wesch's editable syllabus
[michael encouraged us to start this entire netvibes]
so the next year - i gave the kids what they needed for the test, let them know the time was theirs - so whatever time was left over was theirs.
this is how we started with a syllabus,
and
this is what they came up with.. notice it fills in more over time. and this doc lays out the why and how we put it into practice.
again - the flip was more a mindset.. who's owning the learning.
the focus wasn't really a flip for hw.. since they had the whole class time to do that as well.
homework became more if they wanted to do the 20% google time passion stuff.
and they did do both.
[in regard to bold schools: Will Richardson (@willrich45) Wanna help me find some Bold Schools? bit.ly/wkJYYr ]
they started out a little lower than the other pre ap alg 2 classes per data.. and ended a little above.
and they wrote up a four year plan to redefine school. [along with many global journeys, croatia and africa and ...]
tumblr of journey in reverse chronological order
our take.. yes indeed, that's the way to do it. use tech to help you get through stuff you have to be tested on. but it doesn't mean they know it or like it any better. (than what they say normally happens - 75% of kids cheat or cram the night before tests, and we pass them on as proficient - hence the need for remedial courses at uni..etc.)
Jason Fried nudged us further, the 7 hours a day can surely be called into question. it's not about getting better at delivering to a mandate, (compulsory publicly prescribed curriculum), it's about calling that mandate into question. it's about freeing up spaces/time/resources for just in time (with rigor we currently have no idea exists) learning per interest. it's about quality of life.
hence the quiet revolution.
which they crafted for everyone...
we're in year 2 of 4 years.
the first 2 years have been in the shadows by design.. a disruptive innovation.
but ...
we're coming out
- and ...
this is getting ready to turn on a dime.
