carol black

missed this.. so glad you get them up so fast Steve.. thank you.
ib programs using film in classes
more options
huge gap between the rhetoric and reality
wonder years spoke to that
film is to draw on people's real perceptions.. drop the rhetoric
- was in a village that had no education...
wade - everyone has education, they just don't have our form and aren't teaching our curriculum

our society hasn't found a way to live in the world with balance

problem with institutional ed since 1st grade, her friend not doing so well, watched her open the letters with grades, shadow across her face, and it never left
always liked the kids who don't get the good grades, for various reasons,...
studied in college and found out those things are structured into it.. not something one person can change.

our obsession with measuring..
her baby's heart stabilized when held
kangaroo care - held by parents instead of put into plastic boxes
most prestigious hospital in america and they don't need to know this ... neonatal intensive care - profit for hospital??
white man's burden, helping other countries by conquering them
the approach is for every child..
each one individual, rather than preconceived agenda

the invention of failure..

strive to be better than other people, then cut off from caring about ones that haven't done as well
rare to find an a student that is troubled by that
child abuse - the damage that is done on the other end of this - ranking of children - doesn't exist in other cultures

if someone can play the jazz sax, i can take pleasure in that,... not diminishing, because it wasn't a must, same thing about algebra,
we've chosen these little dimensions of human endeavor and rank them on that.

do you enjoy your day? - that's a good measure.. no?
making people feel there is something deeply wrong with them, when it just wasn't their thing

there's people all over the place that are happy with their schools.. it's just the idea that everyone should be happy with that.
there is noons - a short route to chaos - ed should have been included in the first ammendment - free choice of ed - ed is a matter of conscience, reasonable people may differ - if you create a legal structure that says everyone is going to agree - impose a culture on multi-regional nation, multiple ways to worship, but not as many ways to ed your kids
more diverse, people, interesting country if we accepted diversity in ed

Priya Ravi: Hi Carol and Steve, it is a pleasure to know you both and be part of this session. I just noticed that we have a common friend Manish Jain. I don't have any question in particular but would like to share the 30 minute film that I made when I was in India in April. The movie is called 'wisdom and salt water - the beauty of transition from schooling societies to learning societies'. In this film some of the parents shared the damages of school as they have experienced for their children and the benefits they are seeing today by unschooling them. I would strongly recommend everyone to watch this film as this answer a lot of concerns that parents typically have when making the decision to unschool their kids. http://vimeo.com/24997268
