notes on edmodo and microblogging

sat, feb 13

Jeff O'hara - co-founder of Edmodo   twitter: zemote
wife is hs science teacher in surburban chicago

microblogging - more instant communication than blogging, similar to im-ing, short posts, figuring out what's going on right now.  ie: twitter
edmodo - a place teachers could meet with students and communicate

different than twitter - allow more characters, allow files, allow assignments
started closer to twitter, but now more of a facebook like interface, users guided them there,
the threaded response like fb

http://gl.am/fRBa4 - all slides from today

@kyteacher: Edmodo is one of the few tools I've been able to sell other teachers on.  They see its value almost immediately.

join this group he created for us iuq666

group names have to be completely unique
changing it - soon will just be unique to teacher

so - hardyblock3 would work

students can't reply to each other privately - teachers like that

students sign ups are based on code - email is completely optional... just if they want notifications, but email is completely optional

edmodo app to use with iphone and touch

edomodo chalk works with 16

@jackiegerstein: Edmodo looks like what Google Wave should have been ; )

etherpad not going away -
tyler pad
and others
are being created to take over
primary pad

someone offered connexions
Gideon Burton: @MB Connexions is place to assemble open curricula at Rice - http://cnx.org/
{it is cool - been around for years - i should check it out again}

emodo strips last name even if kid puts it in

student accts can't create groups... and can only see groups they're signed up for.

text messaging feature.. only one way.. only for notifications

@cwebbtech: The text notification feature is awesome. One of our teachers includes his Google Voice number for replies, which keeps his personal cell # private. Works GREAT!

edmodo for elementary
ning for hs
{via people in the group - but my sentiment as well - definitely a protected place. it would be a step back for my kids on our ning}

videos seem to be a problem
he's saying animoto - if you dig deeper for a special embed code - works well
and if a code doesn't work - contact them

it has grade book options - and more coming soon.

it has polls feature

@Maureen: I like the idea of turning it into edmodo and grading... I use a drop.io box for my kids now...
