Planetary computation and its geographies can be modeled as a coherent platform, a vertical software/hardware "stack". In his forthcoming book, The Stack: On Software and Sovereignty, Benjamin Bratton explores this topography as a geopolitical framework, one defined by accidents and contradictions as much as by inventions and efficiencies. The design group Metahaven's forthcoming publication, Black Transparency, focuses on the political and aesthetic regimes of contemporary transparency, and their coexistence with networks, institutions, and various (dis)organised groups. The latest in their series of ongoing collaborative discussions, Metahaven and Bratton will take turns using the stack's six layers—Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, and User—offering proposals on the future of each.

How can these coexist? How can students be so technologically savvy while also displaying their lack of basic skills for navigating the digital world?

because if they are in the system... they are beholden... entranced.. (whether out of good or I'll really doesn't matter to this) .. to the crap not being detected.. called out... that being... compulsory content et al...

Students today face a greater challenge in evaluating information than their parents or grandparents did at their age

true... because of all the... too big to know ... info..

but more so... because we've taught / coerced the ability to learn (part of which is crap detect) out of them..

if we hadn't taken their turtle shell in the first place.. they'd be fine. knowing what to do when they don't know what to do ness

we insist we teach them how to read a language.. at 5... that they taught themselves at 1 ish ness

And even though digital natives have grown up in the information age, many of the adults and institutions in their lives are still grappling with its implications. In other words, it's likely that the kind of credulity we see in young people reflects our own collective uncertainty about what we encounter on the digital frontier.

This isn't to suggest any shortcoming on the part of today's teachers. Without the classroom time, quality teaching materials and professional development opportunities in the emerging field of news literacy, teachers cannot reasonably be expected to guide their students to achieve these new skills.
