This is brilliant, deep-dive investigative reporting by @rdevro on the disappearance of 43 Mexican studentshttp://t.co/cbVhYzCY6g

Original Tweet: https://twitter.com/jeremyscahill/status/595262566206676992

Abarca’s alleged criminal links were hardly unique, however. In November, the newspaper Milenio reportedthat eleven other mayors across Guerrero were under federal scrutiny for suspected ties to organized crime.

p 2
The records also showed that the military communicated directly with the municipal police force that attacked and detained the students. Examined in detail by investigative journalist Marcela Turati of Proceso and reviewed by The Intercept, the records indicated that the military, though not a direct participant in the attacks, was aware of some of what was happening and did not intervene.
[..]

The tally of known dead is only a partial count of the casualties. There are tens of thousands of others who have disappeared since the conflict began. More than 22,000 Mexican citizens are currently listed as missing, according to the government’s own tally, though the actual numbers are believed to be far higher. An estimated 70,000 Central American migrants have vanished while crossing the country since 2006.
Like the 43 students from Ayotzinapa, many of Mexico’s disappeared were last seen being loaded into police or military vehicles.
[..]
If cases of enforced disappearance were routinely pursued, they could provide evidence of systemic abuses, which could trigger charges of crimes against humanity and possibly jeopardize the multi-billion dollar security aid package the Mexican government receives from the U.S government, among other consequences. Under the Leahy Law, named after Sen. Patrick Leahy, aid to foreign security forces implicated in gross human rights violations is illegal.
[..]
“I would like to know that this tragedy in Ayotzinapa had to happen,” she adds, “so that the reality that Iguala is living would be revealed.”

Through this work we realized that there were in fact plenty of people who were interested in getting beyond the canned, fixed representations of data provided by apps makers, but were not necessarily interested in learning statistics or experimental science. As an anthropologist, I began to think about this disinterest as also insistence on re-valuing the situatedness of situated knowledge. That is, it is also a recognition that not all problems can be reduced to matters of scientific or positivist enquiry.

First, disenfranchised youth and young adults are at the forefront.  Second, state policing strategy that links specific demographics to crime – or more broadly, security threat – is the target of popular resistance.  Third, and perhaps most saliently, both have the archetypes, rallying cries, and social media savvy that not only galvanizes people for immediate action, but also long-term and sustainable movement building.

When images of the crowds gathering in Tahrir Square emerged, when the people of Tunisia mobilized in the streets, the protestors associated with the Arab Spring were lauded for their courage and heroism in the face of systematic oppression by the American media and governmental representatives and the violent response by Arab states was roundly condemned.  The resources of the United States were mobilized to support those protesting in the streets of Cairo and elsewhere. Although resisting similar kinds of conditions, protestors in Baltimore and cities like it, however, have not been subject to similar kinds of praise. Instead, they were called “thugs” and “criminals” when they took to the streets. In response, state and local governments deployed resources to contain and delegitimize the protestors.

When protestors and protest movements are framed as thugs and criminals, the corresponding response is to stop the protests through the deployment of the National Guard without a corresponding deployment of resources to address poverty, joblessness, dilapidated educational systems and discriminatory policing that prompted the protests in the first place. Condemnation of the protestors and not the conditions that are the subject of the protests is a rhetorical cloak that enables those conditions to continue unabated.

Foreign Lives Matter
"In late April, racism fueled the burning of the city of Baltimore, compelling U.S. President Barack Obama to call it a “slow-rolling crisis.” But many around the world understand it to be more than that.
What does it mean for the rest of the world when its most powerful nation struggles mightily with racism in its midst? For one, it contextualizes the often-heralded notion of American “exceptionalism.” At its core, that idea is an incredibly arrogant notion. It hints of racism and a barely concealed contempt of others, especially the non-Western world. But it is a doctrine that is still ruthlessly enforced in the carnival that is American politics.
The rest of the world sees this. It smells the hypocrisy in Washington when leaders resort to the old saw that America “is a nation of immigrants” while kicking unaccompanied children out of the country en masse.
While Wall Street stocks won’t take a hit from the riots in Baltimore, the image of the United States as a free, fair, and prosperous land for all certainly does. Some 150 years after the end of the U.S. Civil War, the United States has not overcome its reprehensible domestic legacy of racism. And it is time that politicians, academics, and business leaders across the world pause before they readily embrace American ideals and interests.
The average American should know, too, that what’s happening in Baltimore or Ferguson reverberates thousands of miles away."

"Hiding done properly is the internal faithful promise for a proper future emergence, as embryos, as children or even as emerging adults in retreat from the names that have caught us and imprisoned us, often in ways where we have been too easily seen and too easily named......
Hiding is creative, necessary and beautifully subversive of outside interference and control. Hiding leaves life to itself, to become more of itself. Hiding is the radical independence necessary for our emergence into the light of a proper human future."

An Earthquake Exposes Nepal’s Political Rot
"For Nepal, one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in Asia, this catastrophe has laid bare its political dysfunction. Many of those left homeless or injured have been waiting in vain for any form of government assistance. There were no pictures of political leaders visiting stricken citizens, no words of empathy or consolation. Nepalis had to content themselves instead with TV appearances of officials like Communication Minister Minendra Rijal, who merely acknowledged “some weaknesses in managing the relief operation.”
While some foreign countries have already started supplying humanitarian assistance (albeit on a fairly limited scale), the corrupt government machinery is already reportedly seizing much of what they have brought.
While the country’s diversity has many positive aspects, it has also become a major obstacle to political development. The continuing absence of a constitution has stymied further moves toward democracy. Nepal had its last popularly elected local governments two decades ago.
The dismal response to the earthquake, including reports about the misappropriation of relief supplies, means that Kathmandu can no longer pretend the problem doesn’t exist."
