wasting time

George Haines (@George_Haines)

For the people who encourage kids to drop out:nytimes.com/2012/05/30/us/…

As access to devices has spread, children in poorer families are spending considerably more time than children from more well-off families using their television and gadgets to watch shows and videos, play games and connect on social networking sites, studies show. This growing time-wasting gap, policy makers and researchers say, is more a reflection of the ability of parents to monitor and limit how children use technology than of access to it.

who's to say what wasting time is.

aren't we wasting an awful lot of time, by saying we are freeing people up, yet still looking over their shoulder with a check list. how will that ever get us to breathtaking? to quality of life?

perhaps we haven't really set people free, perhaps we haven't gone deep enough on what equity really is, what success really is...  perhaps we are the ones wasting time.

and money:
The new divide is such a cause of concern for the Federal Communications Commission that it is considering a proposal to spend $200 million to create a digital literacy corps. This group of hundreds, even thousands, of trainers would fan out to schools and libraries to teach productive uses of computers for parents, students and job seekers.

Crystal Landscape 7-6, Longmont 9-3
LONGMONT -- Thompson Valley's top summer team showed some youth in its first game against Longmont, but quickly rebounded to split their NCBL opener. A lineup of fresh faces put together 17 hits between the two games and received a brilliant pitching effort from Kevin Laws in the nightcap.
Garrett Smith, leading off, had three hits and scored three runs, and Sam Hardy went 2-for-3 with two runs in the second game for Bruce Kelly's team. The Eagles also played well defensively, with highlight-reel plays from a number of positions in the field.
"I really like our defense, even though we are young we are rock solid," Kelly said. "Sam over at first base, he pulled a rabbit out of his hat a couple of times.
"Kevin pitched a real gem. He's been working on a curveball and he used it three or four times, and it was very effective."

epidemic-of-military-suicides

About 18 veterans kill themselves each day. Thousands from the current wars have already done so. In fact, the number of U.S. soldiers who have died by their own hand is now estimated to be greater than the number (6,460) who have died in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.

what if.. the mindset is different.. what if it is as simple as setting people free. in spaces where they have nothing to prove.. I believe, we would then not only start solving wicked problems.. we might just quit creating them.

I want to paint them
a compelling picture
A man gaining himself
through others
Society... school

A tall man, with white teeth
He shines in the light
A man who has everything
The life
A boat
A wife

Yet as the picture develops
They see
That everything for the man is
Nothing
A yearning for
Everything
That is not nothing
But self

Revealed
Something
A glimmer
A speck of hope
Its vast
Its magnanimous

Self seen
The man for who he IS
he looks free
He looks without need
His everything is now full

The turning of the man
A gaze
Toward the viewer
His eyes
A true reflection
Of lost self

A realization
Gained
A self found
At the painting
Of a Picture
