@HopeJahren: Brave, smart post by @CherryMakes: "we should be able to talk about mental health"scilogs.com/epilogue/im-co…" < @HallyMk1

Time to Change is a classic complex public health intervention. Sometimes it's only truly simple to measure the impact of major public health campaigns from a distance - for instance, it now seems incredible to think that a doctor would recommend smoking for a sore throat. Or that we once thought it was fine to drink a few pints then drive home and, while we were at it, not wear a seatbelt. Yet all of those examples show a massive shift in public attitudes. But none of this happened overnight. Campaigners were in it for the long haul.

“How Capitalism and Regulation Will Reshape the Sharing Economy” by @mjonesmedium.com/what-i-learned…

https://medium.com/what-i-learned-building/f64a7c60b599

Three differentiators make the sharing economy distinctive, enabling new sellers to enter the market: scale, access and trust. What all sharing economy startups have in common is the ability to connect sellers with consumers on a scale that is astronomical in comparison with what was possible even a few years ago.

coincidence of wants..
tech helping that..
imagine a whole city.. and a whole day... flying off.. dancing with... that.
every day.
spaces of permission with nothing to prove.

So, at its core, the dynamics of the sharing economy are actually not new. They don’t come from an alien universe where the laws of capitalism don’t apply — they operate in a way so as to make capitalism more efficient. TheWashington Post’s Dominic Basulto offers this insight:
“…these sharing economy companies are going places where Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” cannot. They are re-calibrating supply and demand, giving consumers access to otherwise unused capacity or idle assets. Instead of representing an entirely new underground economy, the companies of the sharing economy represent more of a supplement, adding capacity while driving down prices in ways that help consumers.”
so basically - upcycling  - seeing what we have
aunched in the mid-nineties, its sellers were mainly “a motley collection of individuals.” They touted the ease of the platform: “‘We make sales of up to $1,500 a month,” [one user explained], simply from searching garage sales and reselling the items online.” However, the seller demographics soon shifted to include a sizable contingent of medium businesses and major corporations. The rules changed to reflect the clientele, including restricted payment options and limiting new sellers in certain categories. Likewise, when Amazon opened up its affiliate channel, nearly all the sellers were small merchants or individuals. By 2009 the New York Times was reportingthat “online marketplaces eBay and Amazon once seemed like surefire places to make extra money or to build an online retail business. It’s not quite so simple anymore.”
Signs of a similar trend are already visible in the sharing economy. Many listings on Airbnb now come from professional property managers, and when the company hired a “head of global hospitality” this fall, users became concerned that the focus on standards and requirements may shut the door on casual hosts. Car sharing services are also experiencing a movement towards professionalism. Individual owner/practitioners are now moving into operating small fleets of cars exclusively for rental on places like Uber.
Another development that may stem the sharing exuberance is the lengthening arm of government regulation. Part of what has made the sharing economy so attractive is the ability to ignore or overlook rules that apply to normal businesses, most notably taxes and licensing requirements. But, as many established businesses have pointed out, winning on an uneven playing field is essentially cheating. In New Orleans, local property owners complain about the influx of short-term rentals:
“…licensed hotels, motels, inns and bed-and-breakfasts annually lose $13 million in revenue to short-term rental scofflaws. That adds up to about $1.4 million in taxes and licensing fees…”
The tide is beginning to turn. Tax-free shopping online — once the strongest lure of any online retailer from Ebay to Amazon — is being legislated away. Airbnb is embroiled in a conflict with New York City over its hotel law that prohibits short term rentals, and has already received a subpoena.

Universities in an Era of 'Non-Lieux' wp.me/p1bQNf-3JU via @NGhoussoub < @drpievann, did you see this?

http://u15.ca/what-we-are-thinking/universities-era-non-lieux

French philosopher Marc Augé describes “places” and “non-places” (“lieux” and “non-lieux”). Non-lieux are spaces that are essentially interchangeable, without distinctiveness. They tend to render humans anonymous.

The second powerful impetus towards homogeneity is the increasing tendency of governments to try to “manage” research programmes and enrollment strategies. Most obviously, the desire to promote the acquisition of defined skills needed to fuel short term economic needs is growing apace around the world. Although this desire may seem reasonable, when linked to economic development strategies that are typically cookie-cutter copies of each other, the result is that universities are being pushed to do the same things everywhere. If I see another so-called “innovation strategy” that proposes to tell students that they will only find jobs if they pursue the STEM disciplines, I might just boil over in frustration. And the increasing tendency of governments to promote “applied research” through industry collaboration at the expense of funding for curiosity-driven research also leads to unhealthy uniformity, supporting the superficial consensus on what we need right now, undermining potentially disruptive discovery that shapes knowledge and changes industries and societies in the longer term.

Throughout history, universities have played three interlocking roles, balanced differently at different times and in different places: teaching new generations; preserving and discovering knowledge; and contributing talent, ideas, advice and challenge to the wider society. In an era of ‘non-lieux”, universities are best placed to fulfill those roles today by resisting the pressures to uniformity, by situating ourselves firmly in our unique places, and contributing to an intergenerational dialogue that requires diversity and disputation.

In an era of “non-lieux”, let universities become more distinctive from each other. In that way we can bring unique resources and gifts to a global dialogue that requires diversity if it is to thrive. Let our universities be real places, places worth discovering, places from which – in working together – we can move the earth.

@bonstewart there’s something really interesting about watching people track the multiple identities of their #rhizo14 mates. just sayin’

@bennettscience agree. Don't want students all the time, but don't want them as "props" either

so how to make gatherings more about the conversation. less about what types/ages/assumptions of people are gathering.. who's to say/know where the insight will come from..
good thing about tech connecting us - its objective - not biased....it will just listen.. in order to connect
