That every university is trying to "compete" and build its own #onlinelearning program(s) shows how few in #highered understand the Internet

became a teacher because mostly lousy teachers taught me, and I wanted to work with teenagers who mirrored my life and might benefit from an adult who once walked in their leaden footsteps.

""It's a long document, 224 pages in all, but there's lots of good stuff in it: "Today in many places we hear a call for greater security. But until exclusion and inequality in society and between peoples are reversed, it will be impossible to eliminate violence. The poor and the poorer peoples are accused of violence, yet without equal opportunities the different forms of aggression and conflict will find a fertile terrain for growth and eventually explode. When a society – whether local, national or global – is willing to leave a part of itself on the fringes, no political programmes or resources spent on law enforcement or surveillance systems can indefinitely guarantee tranquility. This is not the case simply because inequality provokes a violent reaction from those excluded from the system, but because the socioeconomic system is unjust at its root. Just as goodness tends to spread, the toleration of evil, which is injustice, tends to expand its baneful influence and quietly to undermine any political and social system, no matter how solid it may appear. If every action has its consequences, an evil embedded in the structures of a society has a constant potential for disintegration and death. It is evil crystallized in unjust social structures, which cannot be the basis of hope for a better future." page 50, section 59.

Stanley Fish’s deeply thoughtful review of 12 Years a Slave: nyti.ms/1bxJDCS (w plot spoilers)#privilege #hoplelessness
rationalizing man’s inhumanity to man.

cause responsibility for the outcome is distributed among these persons and the institutions they work in, when success is finally achieved it seems to follow from a legal process readers are implicitly invited to trust in

That, however, is not the way it happens in the memoir on which the movie is based. Five months elapse between the time when Northup gives Bass the letter and the time when the sheriff arrives at the plantation, and it is another month before the now-ex-slave once again sees his wife and children. In those months documents are prepared, petitions are made, and governors, senators and Supreme Court justices are recruited for the cause. Because responsibility for the outcome is distributed among these persons and the institutions they work in, when success is finally achieved it seems to follow from a legal process readers are implicitly invited to trust in; if it worked for Northup, it well might work for others. But in the film version, the redress of injustice is so abrupt and so quickly achieved that it is made to seem miraculous and the audience is not invited to generalize from it to any optimistic conclusion about the merits of the liberal state informed by the rule of law.

This can hardly be an accident, given the meticulous craftsmanship of the movie’s structure, the scene-by-scene attending to detail and nuance. I think what McQueen is doing is remedying the defect Northup detected in his own narrative. “If I have failed in anything,” Northup writes in his final paragraph, “it has been in presenting to the reader too prominently the bright side of the picture.” McQueen has carefully removed the bright sides. He gives us no reason to conclude, as Northup does, that there “was much in [Mistress Epps’s] character to admire.” He does not suggest, as Northup does, that “it is not the fault of the slaveholder that he is cruel so much as it is the fault of the system in which he lives.” (In the movie they are one and the same.
