In ‘Notes from Inside’, you mention hearing Bach’s Marcello Adagio as a turning point for you. What is it about this piece and Bach’s music in general that allowed you to find such solace and inspiration?
Bach works on so many levels – he’s mathematically compact, angular, perfectly structured and clearly defined. Everything fits perfectly. And yet within that is one of the most Romantic and visceral composers who ever lived. I love the idea of somehow being able to plumb the depths of our emotional world within a safe and logical framework. I know how pretentious that sounds, but it is remarkable to me that a guy who lost 10 of his 20 kids in infancy or childbirth, was orphaned by the age of 10, lost his wife, most of his siblings and endured a childhood that was unimaginable in its horrors can live well, create thousands of pieces of music that are immortal, universal and infinite whilst keeping his job and holding his shit together. That has to give all of us a bit of hope, doesn’t it?

Al-Jazeera English network, which has disseminated its programming online and over some widely scattered cable systems during the past decade, is generally straightforward in its news coverage, said Philip Seib, a professor of journalism and public policy at the University of Southern California, who has written a book about Al-Jazeera
Even with Al-Jazeera rarely available on TV in the U.S., the Al-Jazeera English network had a substantial following online. But that will end; as a condition of being carried on cable systems, Al-Jazeera will no longer be able to send out a live Internet stream of its programming.
That seems unwise, Marash said. Essentially, Al-Jazeera will be trading a young and growing audience online - the distribution form that best represents the industry's future - for a smaller, older television audience, he said.
"None of this makes any sense unless you talk about it in the context of ego," Marash said.
AJA has said little about its online plans. Al Shihabi said the company's goal is to get near-universal carriage on television, making the worries about the online audience moot.
"We are not coming here to compete," Al Shihabi said. "We are coming here to win."
oh my.

During the Obama administration’s first term, I served as Assistant Secretary for Communications and Outreach in the U.S. Department of Education, where one of my jobs was to monitor criticism of our policies and develop our responses. One of the people I monitored pretty closely was Diane Ravitch.

"Sending a message": what the US and UK are attempting to dotheguardian.com/commentisfree/
Rusbriger explains, this behavior was as inane as it was thuggish: since this is 2013, not 1958, destroying one set of a newspaper's documents doesn't destroy them all, and since the Guardian has multiple people around the world with copies, they achieved nothing but making themselves look incompetently oppress
