‘Seeds of change’ in the struggle against global hunger -ow.ly/onq9P

Seeds lie at the heart of the complex system of food production and global hunger. Here is the problem in a nutshell: currently the world produces more than enough food for everyone in the planet. Yet, according to the UN World Food Programme, close to one billion people will go hungry to bed tonight and 2.6 million children under the age of five will die this year of malnutrition. At the same time, 50 per cent of the food produced in the world does not make it to a plate. In Britain we waste one third of all the food we buy, a pattern replicated in most wealthy countries.

They are linked by a shared belief in the importance of working with nature to create localized food systems that empower small-scale producers

example of seeds. Big corporations like Monsanto develop and patent hybrid and GM seeds that, they claim, improve yields by producing drought and pest-resistant plants. According to their own website, ‘Monsanto patents many of the seed varieties we develop. Patents are necessary to ensure that we are paid for our products and for all the investments we put into developing these products.’ Furthermore, ‘the vast majority of farmers understand and appreciate our research and are willing to pay for our inventions and the value they provide

It seems then, that part of the answer to the future challenges we face as a species might lie in looking back to our ancestral knowledge. Meanwhile, back in Bolivia, an article inCENDA’s newsletter explains in the clearest possible terms the contradiction between growing food for profit or for eating. ‘They tell us that if we use GM seeds, we can grow soya for export and make a lot of money. When will they understand that you cannot eat money?’

Have we forgotten Judith Miller already? Or Colin Powell at the U.N.? Before attacking Syria, let's know the truthslnm.us/U1Q200r

apart from this, the similarities among these three instances of Washington’s wanton hostility toward uncompliant regimes are astonishingly similar.

uncompliant regimes...
whoa..

And so the U.S. stalks into another war in the Middle East. Unlike the Iraq and Afghanistan wars—American works of art, both—the conflict in Syria is somebody else’s canvas. But apart from this, the similarities among these three instances of Washington’s wanton hostility toward uncompliant regimes are astonishingly similar.
Make that tragically similar. History proceeds, we Americans insist on the virtue of ignorance, on learning nothing and knowing nothing. And what we are about to get is what we get, predictably and always. We are a singular people, no question. Maybe even exceptional.

seamus heaney

A rowan like a lipsticked girl.
Between the by-road and the main road
Alder trees at a wet and dripping distance
Stand off among the rushes.
There are the mud-flowers of dialect
And the immortelles of perfect pitch
And that moment when the bird sings very close
To the music of what happens.

New interview with Julian #Assange on his senate run next week australiantimes.co.uk/feature/interv… join/donate: wikileaksparty.org.au

WikiLeaks ‘the organisation’ has long had a reputation for advocating institutional transparency and the free flow of information, with scant regard for the laws that may or may not exist to prevent this. There now seems to be a new focus on bringing the movement’s ideology into the mainstream through political participation. Many have queried whether this attempted metamorphosis of WikiLeaks from anarchist challenger to legitimate political movement can work in practice. Is there not an inherent conflict in trying to be part of the very machinery of government you’ve spent years challenging?
“Not at all,” says Assange. “In fact I think they are complementary.”
It is not the goal to disable government, but to improve it by creating greater accountability.
“You would think that one of the two major parties in seeking to gain extra electoral advantage would make it an issue, but because they have other loyalties, they’re too scared to do that,” says Assange

umair haque - how to know if you're turning into a loser

via Umair - I'm going to do five points on how to know if you're turning into a loser. Enjoy ;)

1. You're turning into a loser if you're hating harder than you love.

2. You're turning into a loser if you're seeking any of the following: revenge, reaction, rewards, shortcuts.

3. You're definitely turning into a loser if making other people feel bad makes you feel good.

4. You're turning into a loser if you're following someone else's dreams.

5. You're turning into a loser if you think what matters in life is won. It isn't. It's created.

6. You're turning into a loser if you believe that there are winners and losers. There aren't. There are leaders and wannabes.

Why should you be an entrepreneur? Because the U.S. has 115,000 janitors, 83,000 bartenders, 323,000 restaurant servers, and 80,000 heavy-duty truck drivers with bachelor’s degrees.
