The question facing humanity is whether we can front-load the bonds of humanity that springs up in disaster response, and turn them into disaster avoidance and preparation?

failure of imagination at this historic juncture is surely as dangerous as not trying anything — however crazy it may seem to try, from the smallest to the grandest.

Thirty years ago, the average gap on SAT-type tests between children of families in the richest 10 percent and bottom 10 percent was about 90 points on an 800-point scale. Today it’s 125 points.
The gap in the mathematical abilities of American kids, by income, is one of widest among the 65 countries participating in the Program for International Student Achievement.

The wealthiest highest-spending districts are now providing about twice as much funding per student as are the lowest-spending districts, according to a federal advisory commission report. In some states, such as California, the ratio is more than three to one.

What are called a “public schools” in many of America’s wealthy communities aren’t really “public” at all. In effect, they’re private schools, whose tuition is hidden away in the purchase price of upscale homes there, and in the corresponding property taxes.

Money isn’t everything, obviously. But how can we pretend it doesn’t count? Money buys the most experienced teachers, less-crowded classrooms, high-quality teaching materials, and after-school programs.
Yet we seem to be doing everything except getting more money to the schools that most need it.
We’re requiring all schools meet high standards, requiring students to take more and more tests, and judging teachers by their students’ test scores.
But until we recognize we’re systematically hobbling schools serving disadvantaged kids, we’re unlikely to make much headway.
it's almost like it doesn't matter - the disparity. ..if the definition of success, ie: test scores/school math ability, doesn't change. i mean - how is more money helping - if it's not used per choice. if it's only advancing an agenda most people wouldn't pick.
i mean factor in suicide rate.. crime..  no?
we've got to try another model.. of life.

he case marks a disturbing trend among authorities to go after researchers, innovators, tinkerers and others who try to do cutting-edge projects

The MIT community has rallied behind the Tidbit students in support of them and their efforts, in stark contrast to the school’s silence when Swartz was arrested.

As MIT students and faculty have warned, the fear that any state can issue broad subpoenas to any student anywhere in the country will have a chilling effect on campus technological innovation beyond Tidbit.”

A lot of this software can be prohibitively expensive, especially for someone who only wants to use the program for a specific project, for instance, or is just interested in learning how to use Photoshop or InDesign. Checking the program out of the library for a week would make far more sense than shelling out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for your own personal copy.
The software-lending library flips on its head users’ whole relationship with the cloud. Now, the program used for editing a video analyzing a statistical dataset will live on the cloud, but the file itself will be on a local hard drive.
“If you’re trying to edit a big, high-definition file on your computer with a copy of Adobe Premiere hosted remotely at a data center across the country,” Deacon noted, “it’s going to require pretty good two-way connectivity.”
The model of remotely hosted software interacting with files sitting only a few inches from users’ faces is something that could revolutionize how computers are set up. With the computational heavy lifting done elsewhere, complex tasks like video editing could be quickly and efficiently done on small, inexpensive machines that only require a fraction of the processing power of many of today’s devices used for similar tasks.

Thus far, the Internet’s greatest innovation has been turning mass media into a two-way street. For the first time ever, anyone could push just as much information out into the world as they received.
At least, that was the hope. In reality, the very physical infrastructure of the Internet made that ideal something that could only be realized partially.

It's not just that 45% of our fellow citizens in Scotland decided they wanted to live in a foreign country. It's that those who chose to stay voted mostly due to fear of what would follow, not because they dismissed the idea of separation itself. It's that the young and the poor did vote for independence, with the old and the wealthy overruling them.
